Dear Yuletide Writer-Type Person:

First and most important: thank you. [info]yuletide is wonderful, and you're wonderful for being a part of it.
the devil's in the optional details )

Basically, I love fan fiction. I like that we as fans can take these things we enjoy and make something new with them instead of being passive consumers. I also find it fascinating to see other people's takes on the same material and characters--where they match up with mine or diverge. You rock for writing this stuff. I'm thrilled at the idea of someone writing something for me, and I'll be happy with whatever you come up with.

fandom-specific notes )

I never know if it's better to write something along the lines of, "Dude. Don't worry. It'll be awesome," or to ramble on like above. If you wanted input, then I hope this letter helped. If you didn't, skip it. But really, don't worry. It'll be awesome.

Again, thank you :-)
-raz0r.girl

P.S. This is all crossposed at [info]raz0rgirl at LJ as well, if LJ's more convenient for you.

It's always after [info]yuletide nominations are closed that you figure out that one fandom you *really* should have nominated. Mine's GMail's backgrounds. Seriously. I use the Bus Stop background for the account I use for [info - personal] raz0rgirl, mostly because I love the little girl in it. Doesn't she look like someone who'd make for a great story?:

GMail bus stop girl & giraffe

The weather was all over the place this weekend, so I got to take screenshots of several of the backgrounds:
screenshots! )
When I took these shots, I noticed that there are several regulars at the bus stop. Fun. Next year.

Speaking of nominated fandoms, I'm kind of surprised by what didn't make it this year (as in what wasn't nominated at all, not rejections). Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex made it, but the GItS films & manga did not. Gibson's Pattern Recognition and Spook Country were nominated, but the Sprawl novels weren't (!!!). And now I'm amused once again by how obvious my cyberpunk fixation is.

I am amused that the notes I'm putting together for my Astrid fic reveal that in my head, she's totes my cypherpunk Mary Sue.

So it's no secret that my all-time, epic Star Trek crush was, is, and always shall be Michelle Forbes as Ro Laren; however, I've been thinking *a lot* about how attractive I always found Mark Lenard's (may he rest in peace) Sarek (now Sarek Prime, I suppose) to be. Even when I was a kid, yo. To wit:

Just had to get that out of my system.

I support the Organization for Transformative Works. I've done some volunteering with the organization, and I follow a lot of what has been done and what's being planned. In particular, I'm personally interested in the Archive of Our Own (it's in closed beta, but open beta is coming soon! I have a beta account, and it's seriously my favorite archive site I've used, no bullshit), the Transformative Works and Cultures academic journal, and the legal advocacy that the OTW does.

This week is the October Fund Drive. Read the announcement for a quick update of what's been done with these projects and others in the past few months. It's exciting.

Right now, there's an anonymous challenge grant that will match donations up to $5000, so anything you can give will go twice as far. There are also premiums (new this year). Here's the link to the page for donations: http://transformativeworks.org/how-you-can-help/support

And here's a photo of my netbook modeling one of the premiums (stickers!):

[info]yuletide nominations are open \o/

I've nominated:

Cory Doctorow - Little Brother
Fringe
Global Frequency (comic)
Janelle Monae - Metropolis: the Chase Suite (album)
Moon (movie)
Octavia E Butler - Fledgling

There were, of course, a bazillion other fandoms I wanted. A lot have already been added and will likely be pretty popular. I'm crossing my fingers for the others. I'm kind of excited this year, because there's *a lot* I'm willing to sign up to write.

Other folks who've already submitted their nominations: did you get a confirmation email? I used a gmail + email, and some systems don't like that + sign. Resolved! [info - personal] thingswithwings pointed out the nominated fandoms page.

Brainstorming for [info]yuletide is happening, which makes me quite happy. I'm signing up this year.

I've also signed up for two days of [info]choc_fic's "100 Days of Color" celebrating people of color, real & fictional, in all media. There are still days available, so check it out.

I've signed up for [info]apocabigbang (only 10K words! That's like a bitty bang). Right now, I'm planning to write Astrid-centered Fringe. I have until sign ups end on Nov. 3 to change my mind. If you're in the mood to end the world (or stave off the end), sign up, too.

I will finish the oft-mentioned exchange fic from the beginning of the year, goshdarnit (so many notes, so little cohesion--also I promised myself I wouldn't read the rest of the fics in the challenge until I was done with mine, and I *really* want to read them).

I plan to go to Arisia in January.

I also plan to participate in [info]14valentines when the time comes.

This takes me through March, which is quite enough, thank you.

Given my notorious deadline issues, I have created a google calendar to keep track of all of this and send me reminders. I am amused.

So... what are you up to?

Between the Lambda Awards dust up (are we *ever* going to move past privilege 101?), Monica Bellucci showing up on the pro-Polanski petition (I didn't think anything could kill my crush on her. I was wrong), and reading a request for McCoy as *nice* slave-owning Antebellum South plantation owner fic (I don't have the words), I'm at a point I rarely get to. It's time to turn off the computer and leave the Internet alone for a while.

I think my fic disclaimer from here on out will be, "fan fiction is fair use, folks." Or maybe, "transformative, people. look it up."

Of course, this implies that I'll ever actually finish anything ever again. Ever. (and yes, I'm still working on the exchange fic that was due in February. ::sigh::)

I need someone to sit next to me and show me how to vid. Or rather, how to use my software properly. I'm usually a lot better at teaching myself how to do these things, but I just can't seem to get the knack on my mac. That rhymed.

Also, I'm having a mixed reaction to the True Blood finale (mostly positive, but some things that I could see coming a mile away pissed me off. May write about it. We'll see).

Reading [info - personal] thingswithwings and [info - personal] eruthros' posts on the creepy fanfiction survey going around and their interactions with the people running the survey:

http://thingswithwings.dreamwidth.org/74276.html
http://eruthros.dreamwidth.org/273840.html

Please read these posts, and don't take the survey.

This situation has me thinking *a lot* about the (creepy) influx of (outsider) academics wanting to do research in fen of color communities, particularly in the aftermath of racefail. Just thinking for now.

Some of us grew up with parents who had Frantz Fanon's** work on their bookshelves and don't find the idea of a 12-year-old receiving a gift copy of The Wretched of the Earth to be anything strange or unusual.*** Just sayin'.

** In fact, the first time I ever saw the word "fanon" (as in fan backstory as opposed to canon), it was regarding Ronon Dex, and I thought the person was talking about Fanon for a moment.

*** I have a friend who read her daughter Gloria Anzaldua out loud when her daughter was around that age. 'Cuz that's how we roll.

Aaaaand, still ridiculously busy. So busy, in fact, that I have seen neither Moon (which, if you know me well, is fairly mind boggling) nor HP6. Sad, I know. Still around though!

(There's wonkiness with html for me, so here's the link to Moon's Website: http://www.sonypictures.com/classics/moon/ Doesn't it look amazing?)
